Various members from the groups Alliance and Portmore Empire have voiced songs attacking each other. Vybz Kartel’s When Since on Foxx’s ‘Life After Death’ rhythm has sparked much discussion since its release last week . In the very explicit song, Vybz Kartel holds nothing back as he attacks Bling Dawg , Mavado, Wayne Marshall, and Bounty Killer. He even went to the extreme stating that at least two of the members of the Alliance participate in oral sex.

Bling Dawg, has responded to “When Since”, saying that Vybz Kartel is hooked on ecstasy. In his song, he said: “You a di worse deejay ’cause yuh a repeat rhyme mediocre arguments caan phase elite line your style beneath mine.”

Alliance leader Bounty Killer, however, said his crew members will not be spending time answering the disses from the Portmore Empire. “Kartel a carry belly fi DASECA ’cause him cannot voice fi dem. Alliance nah answer nobody right yah now. Kartel a try create a likkle animosity. A nuh every time somebody seh ‘A’ we ago answer,” says Bounty Killer . “Mi tell Mavado seh low it , yuh see how long Mavado nuh do no gun song. Him sing Again and Again, den him sing High Unda.”

Bounty Killer does not have a song dissing the Portmore Empire, however he had more to say.”From a guy ago sing and tell my friend about him madda, me ago tek it personal, a bare sucking, sucking him (Kartel) a sing bout because he is a freak,” Bounty Killer said.

In addition to Kartel’s lyrical assault, another Empire member, Lisa Hype, recently did a song, Dat Dem Gone To, in which she made reference to DASECA questioning group’s sexuality in the song when she deejays: “Ah straight people mi roll wid/That’s why mi link Don and not DASECA.” Lisa Hype said that there is another song on the way for the Alliance called Click Click Boom.” Mi haffi mek dem know seh mi have the talent fi kill even a man,” Lisa Hype said.

Lisa Hype and Vybz Kartel are not the only ones voicing songs. Portmore Empire’s Blak Ryno have also voiced songs as part of attack. Bounty Killer had quite a lot to say, especially about Blak Ryno.”All di likkle one weh name Blak Ryno, guh call my name inna song, any weh him sing dat again, a box out teeth a gwaan. How him a guh talk seh Killa nuh buss nobody … a who yuh fadda sey buss him? Di way how dem yute yah ungrateful dem cyan speak truth … bout him a stinga, him a sting wid tongue. SK! & The Alliance Take over North Carolina

Michael Jackson`s Brother For Reggae Sumfest Jamaica

The surviving members of the Jackson Five and brothers of the late King of Pop are set to be in Jamaica next week for the salute to Michael Jackson by Reggae Sumfest, the world`s greatest reggae festival.

Three of the original members of the Jackson Five are confirmed to arrive in Jamaica for the festival next Friday, officials of Summerfest Productions revealed yesterday. Toriano Adaryll `Tito` Jackson, Randy and Jackie Jackson have been confirmed but Marlon, the other original member of the band, may also join their brothers in Jamaica for the 17th annual presentation of Reggae Sumfest, which is this year dedicated to the memory of the fifth member of the Jackson Five, the late, great, Michael Joseph Jackson.

Tito Jackson is set to also perform on the final night of the show, Saturday, July 25th.

Officials also revealed that Katherine Jackson and Michael Jackson`s three children will be guests of the Jamaica government at a later date. They will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement award for Michael Jackson by Summerfest productions.

The Jackson`s are also scheduled to award the government and the people of Jamaica a plaque to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love that has been shown to Michael Jackson in Jamaica.

Jackson had actually visited and performed in Jamaica in 1975 as a member of the Jackson 5. The group was hosted then by former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga, at his home in Temple Meads, St Andrew. At the time, Seaga was opposition leader and head of the now ruling Jamaica Labor Party. The Jackson 5 was the opening act for Bob Marley and the Wailers at the outdoor National Stadium.

Jackson passed away on Thursday, June 25th in Los Angeles after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 50.

Caribbean fans have been among those joining millions around the world and the Jackson family, in mourning his sudden death.

The 17th annual Reggae Sumfest will get underway this Sunday, July 19th, with the annual beach party at Cornwall Beach, featuring the sounds of many of Jamaica`s more popular local deejays including Errol Lee & the Bare Essentials, Cameal Davis, Khalil, Timeka Marshall, ZJ Ice, DJ Mix Master Marvin and Crazy Nei, backed by Danger Zone Super Strong.

But it is the Jagra Dancehall Night, on Thursday , July 23rd, that is sure to crank the heat of this resort haven up higher, as a slew of stars, including Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Lady Saw, Elephant Man, Busy Signal, Spice, Kip Rich, Flippa Mafia and D`Angel take over the stage.

On Friday, July 24th, American R&B stars Ne-Yo and Jazmine Sullivan are set to bring some smooth vibes to the festival while Morgan Heritage, Jah Cure, Coco T and Queen Ifrica are sure to thrill the conscious reggae followers.

The curtains come down on Saturday, July 25th with performances from multi-Grammy-winning star, Tito Jackson, Toni Braxton, Nas, Damian `Jr Gong` Marley, Tarrus Riley, Etana and Da`Ville among others.

Executive Director of Summerfest Productions, Johnny Gourzong, says air and hotels are going fast but can still be accessed through the site along with tickets, at www.reggaesumfest.com.

The Festival has devoted a section of its website to accommodation and fans can view a list of hotels in Montego Bay, as well as read short reviews and other information on the properties. Organizers say they will continue to add more properties as the deals are finalized.

Some of the hotel options available for patrons include the 5 star Fiesta Grand Palladium, which is a mere 25 minutes from the Sangster International Airport. This hotel boasts some 1,000 rooms, a fitness centre, a `club` for children, seven restaurants, and five swimming pools, and a spa.

Reggae Sumfest is presented annually by Summfest Productions. Sponsors for the 2009 event include the Jamaica Tourist Board, Digicel, Air Jamaica, Jamrock Magazine, Ocean Spray, Jagra, Appleton, Carib Beer and Mackeson among others.

Reggae Sumfest brings in an estimated 5,000 visitors to the island, along with US$5 million in revenue to Jamaica, according to a survey done by the Jamaica Tourist Board. Reggae Sumfest is produced annually by Summerfest Productions.

Munga VS Deva Brat...... Round 2

Over the past few months there has been an ongoing lyrical confrontation between the Gangsta Ras, Munga and Portmore Empire's first lieutenant Deva Brat. The feud got so intense at one point it even escalated into and all out fist fight at Stone Love's 35th Anniversary. The fracas almost turn fatal when a knife was pulled by Munga who was eventually restrained before both men were removed from the stage.

Now that the new year is in full swing it seems there is no sign of a truce in sight as just recently both entertainers took a swipe at each other on the Night Creature Riddim with Munga accusing Deva of living in a 'lue' (a popular Dancehall slang used to denote someone living a fictitious lifestyle) and Deva without skipping a beat returned the favour and said Munga a cuss because he knows he going to bite the dust (afraid of being defeated in the lyrical battle, hence his reason for all the arguments).

However, though the accusations by both men may not necessarily be true, the new year as also brought some misfortunes for Deva, who is presently incarcerated in the island 's lock up pending a second date for his hearing regarding his alleged involvement in the carnal abuse of a 14 year old girl in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Now the question begs with Deva one strike down will the Gangsta Ras cease the opportunity to take another swipe at him on wax. Several checks by DNB revealed that the streets are buzzing with anticipation to hear something from Munga, some were even shocked to know nothing has been released to date. Will Munga strike now when Deva is most vulnerable or will he wait until he gets out ..if at all, well only time will tell.

Vybz Kartel Files For Divorce

Vybz Kartel, has decided to end his two year marriage to his wife Stacy Elliott who resides in the United States.

In papers filed with the Jamaican Supreme Court, Kartel, whose real name is Adidjah Palmer, alleged that his 31-year-old bride had given birth to a son who was fathered by another man.

He said he had never lived with his wife since the January 9, 2006 private wedding, pictures of which are posted on the Internet. Kartel also provided for the court a copy of the child's birth certificate. Kartel said also that his wife never visited him in Jamaica after the US revoked his visa to that country some time after the wedding.

The two met at a stage show in Brooklyn, New York and had been dating four years prior to tying the knot in a private ceremony before a marriage officer at the Registrar General Department branch on Trevennion Park Road in Cross Roads, Kingston.

ocal entertainment cable station HYPE-TV and satellite giants Direct-TV have part company. Apparently the partnership never manifested as planned, due to the contract from Direct-TV being a bit too restrictive for the local station.

In an interview with a member of HYPE's liaison team, they explained to 876radio.com the reason for the change of heart.

"First let me say our parting was on amicable terms, we left because we found the contract a little restrictive and seeing they are a satellite company, and from our research we've found that most of our Caribbean people, who is our target audience subscribes to Cable, we were missing out. hence the reason to re-group and change focus.

However, there is still some good news for our Caribbean neighbours and other subscribers worldwide as the station is now available via 'Irie TV', a IPTV (Internet Protocol Televison), which is accessible anywhere there is broadband internet connectivity".

The Caribbean television network offers content from across the Caribbean 24 hours a day. Using a specialize Box that allows, subscribers to view their favorite television channels as well as tune into radio stations from across the Caribbean.

Bounty & Beenie, Gets No Permit

n a recent publication carried by the Jamaica Star, The Police have decided not to grant any permits for two street dances in Majesty Gardens more popularly known as 'Back To'.

According to the lawmen they fear that the events, named after two of Jamaica's longest feuding Dancehall deejays Bounty Killer and Beenie Man, might influence a divide in the community and possible start a war. The sessions, named 'Bounty Sundays' and 'Beenie Tuesdays', have become anticipated fixtures with the residence, but reports surfaced that men from the top of the community are now at odds with those from the lower section which holds 'Beenie Tuesday'.

However residents have denied these claims, saying there is nothing but peace and love. "Dem ting deh a two year ago, everything nice ya now," uttered a member of the 'Bounty Sundays' promotion team. Bounty Sundays has been a weekly event in the community since Last December. According to the promoter, residents of both sections of the community are looking forward to the staging of Beenie Tuesdays, as they both enjoy the happening at Bounty Sundays. "Everything nice...up yahso a up di road and dung deh so a dung di road so more or less dem (dung di road) ago want fi dem niceness to," he says, adding "of course di whole a we party, dem come up ya so and we ago go dung deh so," he further added.

Regardless of what the residents profess, the lawmen are taking no chances. In an interview with the paper, Senior Superintendent Derrick 'Cowboy' Knight said "We are not granting any permission for none of them...That is going to cause conflict and we have to step on conflict because conflict leads to crime"

Chief of the division, Deputy Superintendent Michael Phipps, agrees. "I heard that there was a Bounty Sunday in the area, and all of a sudden there is a Beenie party," he says. "Beenie and Bounty are not friends so anywhere you have both of them there is going to be friction."

Nonetheless the Police said all is not lost for the residents, as they are willing to grant the permits as long as both deejays speak with them. "Until they can both come in and let us know their intentions and let us look at it from the security perspective, then they will not be granted a permit," DSP Phipps said.

Kartel Contemplates Sueing Gleaner

Earlier today we received a text message from an anonymous source that read.

"It is very malicious on the part of the Star to publish a picture without first ascertaining the origin of the photo or confirming the authenticity of the picture and/or its content and as such I have no choice but to take legal action against the Gleaner Company of Jamaica because it obvious they seek to defame my character".

So first instinct was to head for a copy of the local paper upon our acquisition, the story needed no introduction as we were greeted by a large photo on the cover with four men two of whom had likeness to that of deejays Aidonia and Vybz Kartel holding some high powered weapons.

Upon further investigation it was revealed that the two entertainers were locked in a meeting with their attorneys with the intention of pursuing legal actions against The Gleaner Company of Jamaica Ltd. for defamation of character.

According to a statement released by Ms. Valrie Neita-Robertson she said, “We view with some concern the publishing of a photo by The Star in circumstances where the authenticity of the document as well as its origin is not known by the newspaper especially in circumstances where that same newspaper has certain ethical guidelines which it has laid down for itself with respect to news reporting,”.

In the same breath that the statement was made a challenge was also issued to the Police to prove the authenticity of the photo as it is said that the photograph was taken outside of the geographical boundaries and jurisdiction of Jamaica. Even though members of Operation Kingfish are adamant that the photo is 100% authentic.

Efforts by our team to reach the Constabulary Communication Network for a comment proved futile.

Nikki-Z Leaves HYPE-TV

For some time we heard the rumour that the 'hostess with the mostess', Nikki-Z had plan to leave HYPE-TV.

However for some strange reason we just dismissed it as another case of loose gossip, but it seems the rumours have manifested into reality. 876 radio recently caught with the "Z" and asked her about the reason for her departure from the local cable station.

In and exclusive interview she told them that her resignation was tendered and became effective today (Feb.07) and there was no bad blood between, herself and the station, as they parted on amicable terms. "As a matter of fact we are all still good friends ...chuckle".

When asked the reason she said, "I have so many things happening in my life right now, and a lot of projects working on and therefore it was on this basis that I made the decision to leave HYPE, so now I can focus and devote more time to my other projects".

She declined to divulge the details, (she don't want it to get jinxed) but said we should just keep our eyes and ears to the streets as a lot will be unfolding in the coming months.

Of course we did ask if there is any chance of her working for the competitor she laughed and said "NO.. that was never a consideration".

Deva Brat Arrested

Is there an omen in the air?, we are not sure, but one thing for certain with the dawning of the new year, our local entertainer seems to be having a lot of run-ins with the law.

Just minutes ago we received a report that Portmore Empires', Deva Brat had been arrested, and his now behind bars at the hundred man Police station in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Speculations are looming about the reason for his arrest, Meanwhile persons in the vicinity of the station at the time were overheard saying it was carnal abuse. We have NOT verified those claims, and hence will dismiss it as a mere rumours. But It's still unclear if any formal charges have been laid against him.

When DNB contacted the station we were told that information surrounding his arrested was privied and could not be issued. The officer then directed us to speak with the Constabulary Communications Network (CCN) but that proved an unfruitful venture.

In other news, following last night's appeal by members of Operation Kingfish for an interview with Vybz Kartel and Aidonia regarding a disturbing photo which shows a number of men including the deejays holding some high powered weapon. Lawyers representing the entertainers have met with the Police and a meeting is schedule for later this week for them to explain how the weapons came into their possession.

Popular dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel was admonished and discharged in the St Ann's Bay Criminal Court on Tuesday after he apologised for using indecent language at a nightclub in Ocho Rios recently.

The DJ, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, was arrested in Ocho Rios last month for reportedly using expletives during a performance at the Amnesia Night Club.

The Ocho Rios Police said despite numerous cease and desist warnings, Kartel continued to use foul language during his performance.

However when he appeared in court Kartel pleaded guilty and expressed regret for his behaviour.

He told the magistrate that he was celebrating his birthday and had too much to drink.

Vybz Kartel then apologized to the police, the people of St. Ann and the wider public for his behaviour.

The magistrate accepted his apology and admonished and discharged him.

Meanwhile, members of Operation Kingfish said they wanted to interview Kartel and another popular entertainer Sheldon Lawrence, known as Aidonia.

"We have in our position a very disturbing photograph of four men, two of whom we have identified as two of Jamaica's top entertainers, Vybz Kartel and Aidonia. These men were posing with some very powerful weapons and at this moment Operation Kingfish is eager to speak with these two gentlemen," said Inspector Steve Brown, Spokesman for Operation Kingsfish.

He said, "As a matter of fact, we intend to question them in the presence of their lawyers so that they can indicate to us where they got these weapons. So far our records (have) indicated that neither of these two men (is a) licensed firearm holders."

Aidonia & Kartel Wanted by Operation Kingfish

Once again Sheldon Lawrence more popularly known as Aidona and Adidjah Palmer aka Vybz Kartel have found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Earlier today members of Operation Kingfish issued a statement saying they wanted both men for questioning regarding a photograph which contains the two entertainer and two other men posing with several high powered weapons.

According to Inspector Steve Brown, Spokesman for Operation Kingfish, "We are eager to speak with these two gentlemen, and we want to do so in the presence of their lawyers so they can indicate to us how the weapons came into their possession."

He further added that "Checks by our team has revealed that neither of the two entertainers are valid licensed firearm holders. So it is imperative that we conduct an interview with them".

Just days earlier Aidonia was released on bail after he was implicated in an alleged shoot out in the vicinity of Shortwood road, that saw several persons being injured and one man getting killed. That case is still before the courts.

ZJ Liquid Taken Off Air

We can't see the logics behind this one, but it seems that ZIP 103 FM has issued a two weeks suspension for a retroactive breach of the broadcast standards of the station and the Broadcasting Commission Regulations and Code.

According to information reaching the offices of DNB, the station suspended ZJ Liquid whose real name is Michael Brissett for material that went on air during his 'Fresh to Death Wednesdays' segment on November 7, 2007.

Apparently one of his CDs had material including expletives and sexually explicit material that should not have been aired.

The Broadcasting Commission wrote to Grove Broadcasting Corporation, operators of ZIP 103 FM advising that the broadcast contravened the television and sound broadcasting regulations and the children's code for programming.

Grove Broadcasting is complying with a set of conditions set down by the Broadcasting Commission and at the same time has suspended ZJ Liquid.

The station has also worked out a set of procedures for DJ's including prohibiting the use of their personal laptops and other material from being directly connected with that of the station.

Of course the question begs how did the Commission miss this infringement and why wait until three months later to impose the sanction. Late last night we ventures on the streets of the city to get some thoughts from listeners of the station and in the words of one faithful female fan "A wah duh dem people deh, ah weh dem wha mi go duh listen FAME.. dem betta just try hurry up and put on back mi baby cause a him alone mek mi listen duh station deh and some time Nikki-Z wid har suss...tell me a who dweet mek mi call up deh now...cause dem too brite". Needless to say we were unable to supply her with that information.

Others had a different view and said the commission had done the right thing as standards must be maintained.

MAVADO takes over Cassava Piece

Dancehall's fastest rising bad boy Mavado and internationally acclaimed music video director, Little X recently took over the community of Cassava Piece off Mannings Hill Road for the video shoot of 'Last Night'. The track a chart topper from last Summer, even though by Jamaican standards it's old, is still creating quite a bit of buzz overseas and is also rated as a favorite on the album by dancehall fans around the world.

The video shoot which portrays the gritty lifestyle of living in the inner city, while somewhat glorifying the violence that takes place was packed with star studded cameos from the likes of the head of the Alliance himself, Warlord Bounty Killer, Bling Dawg, Flexxx, Nikki-Z and a slew of other affiliates too numerous to mention.

The project is now on the cutting table and is slated for release in the coming weeks. New Album For Sizzla Kalonji

fter 2006 The Overstanding produced by hip hop producer Damon Dash, Sizzla continues to collaborate with American producers. He worked this time with MBIG label from Florida which already released two riddims featuring Kalonji’s vocal cuts (‘No Bed A Rose’ on the dancehall Shaolin Temple riddim and ‘Watch Over Me’ on Rootal riddim) and the ‘Exceed Of Love’ single in 2007.

The new album entitled Addicted will be out on the 25th of March 2008 on MBIG music label that also works with Spragga Benz or Merciless. This set will principally feature dancehall and hip hop instrumentals but also the roots ‘Watch Over Me’ released previous year on MBIG music’ Rootal riddim. More details coming soon…

Jah Cure nominated for many awards

With New Year in full swing, ace singer Jah Cure has copped numerous nominations for the upcoming awards season.For the Reggae Academy Awards, which recognises work released between December 1, 2006 and November 30, 2007, Jah Cure has four nominations. Cure is nominated for Most Popular Artiste and Best Solo Male Vocalist while his song Sticky is nominated for Most Popular Song and the album 'True Reflection' is nominated for Album of the Year. The inaugural presentation of Reggae Academy Awards is set for February 24, at the National Indoor Sports Centre (Jamaica) and Jah Cure will be in Attendance.

For the Excellence In Music And Entertainment (EME) Awards which will be broadcast live on Hot 102 from the gardens of the Jamaica Pegasus on February 7th; Jah Cure is nominated in three categories. Jah Cure has received nominations in the categories song of the year; for his number 1 hit Sticky, Male Vocalist of The Year and Cultural Artiste Of The Year.

For the IRIE FM Music Awards which will be held on February 13, 2008, Jah Cure is nominated in the category, Singer of the Year - Male.

Jah Cure is currently busy in the studio working on new material for 2008 and is appreciative of the recognition his work has earned through these nominations. Busy Signal's Canadian tour. A Hit

Jamaica's Ace dancehall deejay Busy Signal recently returned from a successful eight-day Canadian tour. Signal stepped out in Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, St. Catherines and Waterloo, to large crowds who hung on his every word.

“Although it was cold, the people came out and show dem love for Busy Signal music and it was a great experience”, says Signal

The hit single "Nah Go A Jail" has been number one on the Canadian Reggae charts for the last three weeks and was one of the biggest hits and most requested songs on the tour.

Busy will be back on the local scene at Spectrum and the Youth View Awards.
Signal has also picked up nominations for several award shows which will be held in February.
The Youth View Awards will be held on February 1 and Busy Signal will be performing at both the awards show and the after party at Cuddyz. Scare Dem Crew Reunion!

In recent times there have been talks of a possible Scare Dem Crew reunion but this has been denied by the former members of the group.

"No sah, no reunion no deh deh. Everybody a jus brethren. Wi naah go do no booking together 'cause every man have dem own career," said Elephant Man, as he dispelled rumours of a reunion. He left the group in 1999. Ele, however, pointed out that the members of the crew are still friends as they still 'link up' on a regular basis.

"Wi nuh need nobody fi tell wi fi come together an' do a song. Wi can jus do wi ting," he added.

Harry Toddler, another former member of the group, says they have not reunited but any decision to reunite will be made by Elephant Man. He, however, made mention of a song they will do with members of the Bounty Killer-led Alliance.

Scare dem-alliance?

This was confirmed by Elephant Man who says the song is called One For All, All For One. It was produced by Birch Hill and will be released soon. "Bounty start the group and him seh it would be good if we do a Scare Dem an' Alliance song," he said.

Nitty Kutchie says he would be happy for a reunion but this can only be decided by Bounty Killer who started the group and, as a result, he 'calls the shots'. He says they have always been a unit and it will remain that way as they still 'link' and party together.

"If wi fi unite on record mi ready fi it. It was just a likkle difference wid (Harry) Toddler and (Bounty) Killer di other day but everything gungu back yah now," Nitty Kutchie said in reference to a confrontation between Bounty Killer and Harry Toddler. Dancehall superstar Shaggy turned up the heat on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (NBC) as the featured guest artist on the episode that aired live on January 21, 2008. No stranger to prime time, Shaggy was originally slated on Jay Leno when his new album Intoxication dropped back in November, but the much anticipated appearance was postponed due to the writers' strike in Hollywood.

VP Records want to buy Greensleeves Records

VP Records, the world's leading reggae record company, has announced that it has made an offer to purchase Greensleeves Records & Publishing from Zest Group plc, subject to the approval of Zest's shareholders. VP Records will inherit a catalogue comprised of some of the most notable albums of the genre, from Elephant Man to Yellowman and hit songs recorded by such acts as Rihanna, Sean Paul and Shaggy.

Chris Chin and Randy Chin, respectively Chief Executive Officer and President of VP Records, further added: "Although Greensleeves has historically been our competitor, we have always had the utmost respect for what Greensleeves stood for. The label and its founders had a long term commitment to Reggae music and no one is better positioned than VP Records to understand the need to respect this legacy. Miss Ross Booed in Jamaica

Diana Ross pissed off a crowd of 40,000 at the 2008 Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival on Saturday, where Miss Thing, 63, was booed and heckled by Jamaicans attending the festival in Montego Bay -- after organizers told them that "to honor Miss Ross' wishes, she will not be shown on the monitors." That news was greeted with widespread hissing. Oh no she didn't!

Patrons in the stadium-sized arena were unable to see the diva onstage, so they called for organizers to put her performance up on the big screen. "It was at the eleventh hour that her manager said she wouldn't allow us to IMAG (In Vivo Imaging) her performance," said a concert promoter, "and, if any cameras were present, she would not go on stage."

Hisses turned to full-out boos when Ross started her set with Supremes hits -- and the crowd beyond the first section couldn't see her -- and the booing continued throughout her set.

Festival spokesperson Carlette DeLeon issued a statement Sunday blaming Ross for upsetting the Jamaica crowd, saying, "The much anticipated performance of Diana Ross on Saturday proved somewhat disappointing to many patrons who expected a very interactive set. Miss Ross' request to have a restricted display of her performance however, inconvenienced patrons who were left feeling distanced from the stage and her performance."

Attendees paid from $80 to $307 to watch Ross -- who was reportedly paid $300,000 for the gig -- perform the hour-long set with fellow headliners Mary Mary, Billy Ocean and KoKo Taylor. See the VIDEO here

Warrant out for Scratchy B's arrest

Popular dancehall selector Scratchy B, whose real name is Brian Clarke, is now being sought by the police for questioning about a reported domestic dispute between himself and a woman claiming to be his babymother, Ann Marie Adams.

According to the Waterford police, Adams had reported an incident of abuse on Sunday, January 13, the same day on which it allegedly occurred.

"She (Adams) went to their house and caught him (Scratchy B) with another woman and he apparently hit her in the face," a constable attached to the Waterford Police Station told THE STAR.

Assault

The investigating officer for the case, Constable Stephenson, says, "A warrant is now out for his (Scratchy B's) arrest for assault, O.B. (occasioning bodily) harm and unlawful wounding."

The officer also added, "No arrests have been made so far, and we understand that he (Scratchy B) was off the island for a show last week."

However, when contacted, Scratchy B said he was not aware that the police were looking for him.

"Mi nuh know 'bout dat, an mi nuh know 'bout no incident (the alleged domestic dispute between himself and his babymother). A today dem bruk inna mi car an' mi deh a station. Mi nuh inna di bag a careless ting, mi nuh know wah dem deh pon," Scratchy said.

Adams, who says she is the mother of two of Scratchy B's children (twins, age three years) confirms the police report. She says she has lived with the famed selector for more than five years.

Scratchy B, who is the head of the local Sound System, Cash Money, says however, "Mi nuh know 'bout dat, mi nuh have nuh babymother out yah (Jamaica)."

Appropriately named Reggae Uncensored, the footage showcases key elements of Reggae and its sub-culture in a candid way with sustained images of sizzling performances strung together with generous portions of drugs, sex and the inevitable passa passa.

The DVD gives an inside look at what's really going on in the world of reggae music. It takes the viewer on the road, back stage, behind the hallowed closed doors and beyond the eye of mainstream media to document the real truths.

The first of several episodes features today's brightest and biggest stars: Damian Marley, Sean Paul, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Sizzla Kalonji, Ninja Man and Junior Reid. The documentary also features the contemporary crop of hit makers - Mavado, Collie Budzz, Ding Dong, Aidonia, Macka Diamond and Empire Isis to name a few.

This groundbreaking DVD title is broken down in chapters very much like a storybook. Dancehall artiste Aidonia, whose real name is Sheldon Lawrence, is getting set to release his Jail Story this weekend, as he speaks out for the first time about his recent ordeal of having had to serve time in jail for gun-related charges.

Aidonia, who is currently out on bail since last Friday (January 18), wasted no time in getting back into the studio and has already recorded two

songs.

According to his manager and brother, Lav, "right now, him (Aidonia) voice two tune since him out for Stephen McGregor at Big Ship. One of the songs he even helped to co-produce called Jail Story, which is really all about what happened and his whole experience. And that happened because of some badmind people weh a try get him down but that was not able to stop him."

He continued: "the Jail Story song is an exclusive song that he (Aidonia) co-produced, but nutt'n nuh change, and right yah now him a guh back inna di studio. suh a jus crazy ting an di usual. nutt'n nuh change. That song (Jail Story) is now being mixed and finalised so it will be released by this weekend on all radio stations."

Lav also explained that the situation has not impacted negatively on Aidonia's career, in that he would still be allowed to honour shows that had been booked abroad.

Last week, Resident Magistrate Glen Brown ordered that Aidonia be charged and brought before the Gun Court on Friday (January 18). Lawrence had at the time, been in police custody since January 5, 2008, in connection with the shooting of a man on the night of January 5.

Aidonia is due back in court on February 1.

Vybz Kartel arrested for foul language

Popular dancehall entertainer, Vybz Kartel, was on Saturday(12 January 2008) night arrested in Ocho Rios, St. Ann for indecent behaviour.

Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidjah Palmer, was reportedly using expletives during a live performance at the Amnesia Club.

The Ocho Rios Police say despite numerous cease and desist warnings from them, Kartel continued to use expletives during his performance.

He was granted bail Sunday morning and is schedule to appear in the Ocho Rios Resident Magistrate Court on February 5.

Vybz Kartel, rose to fame in 2002, as the protégé of fellow deejay Bounty Killa and his group, the Alliance.

In 2006, he left the Alliance and started his own group, the Portmore Empire.

Sizzla assault reggae artiste Jah Cure?

It was reported that dancehall reggae artiste Sizzla and reggae artiste Jah Cure had a minor misunderstanding back stage at Cocoa Tea's Dancehall Jam Jam stage show that was held on December 31st.

Since the alleged incident took place, Jamaican music fans have been trying to ascertain whether the allegations are true. This column tried to get in touch with both parties but was not successful in doing so. However, a press release from Jah Cure’s publicist was sent to the media hours after the alleged incident.

"2007 was a challenging year for me; however, throughout the year I was able to stay focused on the music while maintaining a positive attitude. I am here to uplift the people as I myself was once down. I want to use my music to comfort the hurt and bring joy to the sad.

Wayne Marshall plots new album for 2008

Dancehall artiste Wayne Marshall is plotting a major comeback to the dancehall fold in 2008. Marshall whose real name is Wayne Mitchell, says his forthcoming album will be produced mostly by Big Ship’s Stephen McGregor. ‘For the next album I am trying to think outside of the box, because I am putting all of my experiences on record’, Marshall told this column recently.

Marshall’s debut album Marshall Law was released in 2003 via VP Records. He has since parted ways with the New York based independent reggae outfit. ‘The album is coming out the second quarter of 2008 and it is being produced in conjunction with Big Ship. There will be other producers contributing to the album, but for the most part, Big Ship will take care of the production’, Marshall added.

Marshall currently has a slew of singles that are impacting at radio. These include Smoking on Some, Who and Dem, Keeping it Gangster with the Alliance, Pot Hole on the bad wire rhythm; and Me By Myself.

Marshall currently has the number three song on the charts in the British Virgin Islands with the Guardian Angel rhythm influenced Give Me Strength. He recently recorded All For One with the Alliance and Scare Dem Crew. That song was produced by Christopher Birch. ‘We are also working on the Alliance album so that is something that the fans can look forward to early next year’, said Marshall.

Higher Degree featuring Sean Paul, Wings of An Angel featuring Tessanne Chin, and a collaboration with Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley are among Marshall recently recorded singles.

Sean Paul’s Temperature is Too High

It’s no secret that dancehall reggae has an effect on women. The right song can trigger a sensual display of body movement on the dance floor or a seizure, as one woman discovered when hearing Sean Paul’s hit song "Temperature."

The New York Post reports that Stacey Gayle, a 24-year-old woman from Queens, NY, suffered from a type of music-triggered seizure called musicogenic epilepsy the moment she hears "Temperature."

"As soon as the beat comes on, I don't know what it is, it just triggers my seizure," said Gayle, an admitted Sean Paul fan, who noted that the song caused a prior seizure. "It's like a weird sensation you get, like a tingling in your head. I smelled something funny, a weird smell."

Fortunately for her, the doctors were able to remove the part of her brain that was responsible for triggering the condition by using "Temperature" to induce the seizures so the could locate the area.

As a result, Gayle hasn’t had a seizure in three months.

Caribbean music has always been depicted in certain ways artists are almost always vying for love, lust, power or revenge, common themes in urban music emanating from the American hip-hop and rap game. However, one thing you almost never hear, are Caribbean artists driving lyrics that boast of their personal wealth and financial status.

As much advancements made in time and technology, many Caribbean countries remain third-world economies, and the musical stars emerging from these lands rich in culture and heritage are its modern-day royalty. However, the majority of stars (some superstars), have remained relatively humble in song and speech, of their new-money status. In the States where new money can provide lyrics for an entire song, that has not been the case in the Caribbean, until now.

But does adopting the bling lyrics alienate or acquire fans? The argument anything that sounds good will be sell is no longer valid, especially when some Caribbean nations are credited with producing more music per capita than many other countries in the entire world. With the infinite pool of talent, fans can truly make or break careers, and staying focused on the expectations of one's fan base can be key to an artist's success, and inevitably lead to ultimate bling bling.

Even after decades, revered reggae artist Beres Hammond's recent single "Try If You Want" opens with, "I might be poor but I've got my ambition," while Shaggy and Sean Paul are still rapping about getting girls, and soca star Machel Montano never forgets about wining. Even dancehall newcomer Mavado, who charges upwards of $20,000 U.S. per club performance overseas, never addresses it in his music. In fact, he's often viewed in his videos singing about being on the "gully side" or the ghetto, while sporting $400 sunglasses from couture Italian designing house, Bvlgari.

These are a few of the Caribbean artists who currently perform for sold-out crowds internationally and pack away big bucks, but never mix their bling into their ting.

Now cops raid 'Prendy's on the beach

PRENDY'S on the beach', the popular party staged at the Hellshire beach in St Catherine on Sundays, yesterday morning became the latest in a series of events raided by the police in search of wanted men, illegal weapons and drugs.

The cops swooped down on the party at approximately 3:00 am, setting up a roadblock along the Hellshire main road as the patrons exited the venue.

The patrons were stopped and searched.

While the cops found no guns or wanted men, they seized several knives and sticks of marijuana. It was also alleged that several men were taken into custody, processed and released, but this was not confirmed by the police.

Yesterday, the police told the Observer that the raid was carried out after receiving complaints of gunshots being fired at the parties.

Only a month ago, police raided the birthday bash put on by popular dancehall deejay David 'Mavado' Brooks in St Andrew.

The cops said they recovered a Smith and Wesson handgun as well as several knives and sticks of marijuana during that raid. However, no one was arrested in connection with the gun find.

Tarrus Riley
His hit tune She's Royal may only be months old but it has perhaps earned its place among the greatest reggae love songs of all time. The song, from his 2006 album Parables, is an ode to womanhood, femininity and inner-beauty made possible by way of breezy vocals atop a groovy melody. What's more, he firmly established himself as a new age talent, appearing on all the year's major shows and doing well despite the demand for trite dance-inspired numbers.

Mavado
Some laud him, while others simply love to hate him but no one can deny that there's a certain "disturbingly genius" quality to dancehall star Mavado. Our fascination was kindled in late '06 with the Alliance member's break-out single Real McKoy, then came the ghetto anthem Gullyside followed by a slew of others which led up to the 2007 release, The Symphony of David Brooks (the artiste's given name). His music, a socially-deviant-but-creative concoction of blood, bullets and brute force (sexual or otherwise), continues to spawn heated debates and compels even those with the stiffest upper lips to listen out for the message from Jamaica's inner-city youth. And that's exactly what makes Mavado the dancehall don man of 2007.

Beenie Man
Simply put, he's the only (yes only) artiste who, despite several personal and professional woes, can maintain musical currency, "switch up the game" and make listeners still accept him as if nothing ever happened. All hail the king!

Mr Vegas
His super resurgence brought with it a string of moves Tek Weh Yuhself, Raging Bull and Hot Wuk. And though illness left him hospitalised for some time last summer, it wasn't enough to stop him from performing at the season's hottest show (read: Sumfest).

Macka Diamond
It's been a helluva ride for the money-goddess-come-author. There was Hula Hoop and Dandy Shandy as well as the much tooted "official dancehall novel" Bun Him, inspired from her hit tune of the same name featuring BlackER. We loved too, how she handled herself amidst rumours that her friendship with Spice was in turmoil and the changing of the guard.

Queen Ifrica
She's been around a while but it wasn't until 2007 that Jamaica started noticing Queen Ifrica. Thanks to her break-out single Below The Waist, Ifrica is now the poster girl for the modern Rastafarian woman.

Etana
Her name means "The strong one" in Swahili and she certainly proved her strength last year. Copping the Jamaica Observer TEENage Choice Award for Best Cultural Artiste in mid-October, the "warrior princess" was a hit with the socially-conscious Roots while her latest release Warrior Love is poised to do well in '08.

Assassin
His rhymes are, as his name suggests, deadly. And in 2007 the deejay born Jeffery Campbell had a lot to say, from his ghetto anthem Gully Sitt'n from the album of the same name to the fierce Dem A Cissy. He proved that though he says "Red Square" he's all about making his own unique mark.

Busy Signal
With revamped style and a flow inspired by several genres, Busy Signal broke away from his scion Bounty Killer's shadow. And it didn't hurt that while doing so, he scored with These Are The Days and the still-popular Jail. And if that isn't proof enough, he's one of the contenders for Deejay of the Year. Need we say more?

Voice Mail
"Hey" was their phrase and dancing was their inspiration in '07. The gentlemen from Voice Mail became a bona fide dancehall supergroup with tracks like Dancing Fever, I Need You and Get Up. It didn't stop there, however, since four tri-city tours of Japan helped them to solidify their hold on the Asian market, while their tracks rotated in happening dancehall stomping grounds like Bembe and Dutty Fridaze, to name a few.

Beenie Thief Bounty Killer's lady AGAIN?

Sim simma! Beenie Man has run off with rival dancehall artist Bounty Killer's girlfriend - for the second time!

The two emcees have been beefing for YEARS. Amidst the most serious bout of rivalry, Beenie got it together with Bounty Killer's fiancé, D'Angel. Beanie even went so far as to marry the girl, although they later separated.

Anyway! Either history repeats, or Beanie loves the taste of Bounty's dick... or both. Word around the campfire is Beenie Man is stepping out with Bounty Killer's current beau, Latiesh Flawless, on the sly. Apparently they hooked up at a gig last month, and have been secretly dating ever since. GROVE!

Munga Talks Bout Dancehall & Violence

September 15, 2007, was a bad night for local dancehall. After weeks of solid concert promotion and buildup for one of the liveliest dancehall shows of the year, a great concert was brought to a screeching halt because of bullets and ignorance.

Reggae rebels Mavado and newcomer Munga Honorable were performing at the Gold Coast Roller Rink in Fort Lauderdale — an odd venue for a dancehall concert but one that somehow worked out surprisingly well. Police were all over the place, the rudeboys seemed not to care, and good music, good vibes, and a cloud of ganja smoke kept the skating rink animated well into the wee hours. Despite all the craziness that perforated the show, Munga's set was as solid as ever. With thick locks, shiny gold teeth, hip-hop attire, and a brazen attitude reminiscent of Tupac or Tony Montana, Munga's stage presence that night demonstrated why he's undeniably the biggest dancehall star on the rise. He and Mavado performed together for ten or 15 minutes, ripping through up-tempo riddims that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Twenty seconds into each tune, the DJ would pull up the track and spin it again, all of which kept driving the energy of the crowd forward.

Just as the night's unannounced special guest, Bounty Killer, jumped on stage and the three artists started sending the crowd toward a musical orgasm, everything went to shit. Sounds of gunshots erupted, police stormed the stage with weapons drawn, and a concert that managed to surpass its own considerable hype was cut short just as it was going from great to incredible.

Munga was especially pissed-off after the shooting (in which a few rounds were fired into the air and nobody was injured), but he's able to laugh about it all now.

"That was a gun salute, ya know," Munga says via phone from Jamaica. "That was just a dancehall audience t'ing. It wasn't no disagreement or a fight. That was just a gun salute. The police rushed the stage and shut down the show, but de people dem were just welcoming us, ya know."

Well, I've been to a lot of concerts, and anytime an artist needs to be welcomed with a gun salute, it's going to be one hell of a show, but something is out of whack.

This weekend, Munga marks his return to Fort Lauderdale, headlining a show at Revolution. Things aren't expected to get out of hand at all. But Munga pulled a knife on dancehall troublemaker Deva Brat when the two got into an onstage fistfight. Popular singjay Sizzla was on hand that night to restore order to the concert, which is a sign that dancehall artists can themselves create peace. But two weeks ago, there was another altercation — this time Sizzla getting into it with Jah Cure!

With this string of recent incidents, it seemed like a good time to speak with Munga about violence in dancehall, since he's quickly and perhaps unfairly becoming the poster boy for all of the genre's problems.

"As a society, we always need somebody to blame," Munga offers. "I think the media needs someone to point the finger at. Right now, they want to point the finger at me. It's just my time to go through this. Artists have been blamed for violence in music before me, and they will be blamed after me."

His answer has merit. It is unfair to put all of this on the shoulders of a few rebellious rockers like Munga and Mavado, when the genre has had a bad reputation for years. But I press him on why there's so much violence in dancehall specifically — as the softer and more melodic genre of reggae tends to avoid such problems.

"Why is it that there's so much violence in society?" he answers back. "Art imitates life, not the other way around. Let's be clear about that. Dancehall is just music. Real violence is going on worldwide, in Pakistan, India, Israel, and especially America. Why are people afraid to talk about that?"

It's a good question. I'd throw out a response, but Munga is on a roll.

"Me say, even I, as a younger youth growing up in Jamaica, from the country to the ghettos of Kingston, I was majorly influenced by what I saw on TV as far as being rebellious," Munga continues. "Me see Al Capone on the TV and Gumshoe and Scarface. That influenced me way more than dancehall. We as artists are creating the music that the people dem want to hear, and we rhyme about what we see."

He's unapologetic about dancehall's rougher edges and takes the stance that, if people want to see less violence in the music, better living conditions for Jamaicans need to come first.

I wouldn't call him the Robin Hood of reggae, but he speaks up for poor people in Jamaica — and sometimes aggression comes with that perspective. And as for his fracas with Deva Brat, he's quick to add: "Me and him never had no beef. Him overstep him boundary, and me take care of that. Yeah, I pulled my knife on him, but what did I do? I put it back. That was a natural reaction, but cooler heads prevailed.

"This music goes through phases," he continues. "It was in the one-drop era for awhile, with Fantan Mojah and I-Wayne, and now it's going through a more rebellious, gangster stage. But it always changes. This is a new year. Before we start judging, let's see what happens."
